My thoughts on Symbol Design

Symbols are something we as humans have been using since prehistoric periods, from pictograms to modern signs we see at commercial spaces, they have co-existed with us all this while. I have always felt intrigued by the fact that how some sings have the power to make me feel good or bad.

I’m more likely to smile when I see a McDonalds logo vs a Pizza Hut logo. Or the satisfaction of looking at an Apple logo vs a Toshiba logo.

When I think of Symbol Design I think of the study and research that goes behind developing a good symbol. The importance of factors like psychology, linguistics and other contextual factors that help shape a symbol from a few sketches on paper.

How to weigh in all these factors and prioritise some factors over others is another challenge I think exists. A good design perhaps should be perfect mixture of all, or a mixture of factors that suits a certain audience it is intended for.
